For over 20 years we have been designing, constructing and completing a vast array of driveways in the Lancaster area. It's safe to say we've learnt a lot on the way.
Most driveways start out the same way, we finalise a design with the clients, spray out the project and bring in the machinery and plant needed, usually a 1.5 or a 3.5 ton digger depending on driveway size and a dumper for shifting the spoil. We will always dig out more than the minimum amount, we are firm believers in having a strong base for all our landscaping projects. Once the spoil is removed, either by ourselves or a grab wagon we can start constructing. If channel drains are required, they are put in first, we always have somewhere for the water to head to, whether its a soakaway, top water drain or through the driveway itself, creating the right falls for water drainage is one of our top priorities. When the drainage has been installed we will lay a geotextile membrane over the whole area, this creates a barrier against weed growth, and adds stability and strength to the driveway. We'll then hardcore over the top of the membrane, using a 40mm to dust base layer, usually 150-200mm deep, then a 20mm to dust mid layer, generally 50-75mm deep these layers will be repeatedly whacked in layers to create a super solid foundation. Now, there is a few different ways to go, depending on the top coat finish. If we're laying flagstones, we'll use a full bed of strong concrete sand mortar, with slurry primed backs, and an epoxy resin grout, for block paving we'll screed out 25mm of limestone chippings for the blocks to sit on, then lock in with a dry kiln sand. A 35mm tarmac topping requires a 150mm concrete base or a 75mm tarmac base coat. Or the original decorative aggregate just requires an edging border and then raking out nice and flat. We are Tobermore approved paving contractors and have a great expertise and a lot of experience in many forms of driveway, so rest assured, you're in safe hands.
